Raising Money for The American Cancer Society

My team and I enjoy participating in community events as much as possible. In March, we participated in Craven County's Home and Garden Show. We set up a booth with an "angel tree." Thank you so much to all of you who donated $5 to The American Cancer Society and received your own handcrafted angel art. Craig's RealTeam raised $255.00 through our angel tree project and we know it goes to a great cause.

Relay for Life® Angel Art

Keever Carpenter, Craig's RealTeam buyer specialist, participates as a walker in the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life®. She also serves on the Neuse River Area Association of Realtors Relay for Life committee. This is one of the annual charitable events that Keever supports. Craven County's Relay for Life will be held April 28, 2007 at Grover C. Fields Middle School. Relay "gives you the power to help in the fight against cancer. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the American Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn’t take the lives of our friends and family." 2007 Spring Craven County New Bern Home Builder's Annual Parade of Homes

Coming up on the weekends of April 21st and 22nd as well as April 28th and 29th, Craig's RealTeam will have booths set up at 2007 Spring Craven County New Bern Home Builder's Annual Parade of Homes.

I invite you to come out and participate in this free event. If you're not familiar with the Parade of Homes, the idea is that newly constructed homes built by area builders all have an "open house" so you can tour the homes and premises. You go from home to home to view the wide variety of properties available on the market today. Builders compete with each other in these homes, because several lucky companies will receive 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. These awards are coveted by area homebuilders because they indicate the home is exceptional based on various stringent criteria.

Viewing the homes is a great way to explore contemporary home styles; to stay abreast of what area builders are doing; and to catch a glimpse of future interior decorating trends. It's also a great social event, with opportunities to meet home and garden industry experts, landscape designers, real estate professionals, and construction firm owners, as well as your neighbors from Craven County and visitors from out of town.

New Tax Laws Make it a Good Time to Invest in Real Estate

According to NAR® statistics, in 2005, second homes made up around 40 percent of all existing homes sales. About 27.7 percent were purchased for investment properties and 12.2 percent were purchased as vacation homes.

One of the reasons for the strong rise in second home purchases is changes in the tax law HR 2014, with a provision that, when you sell your home, you can keep capital gains of up to $500,000 for married filing jointly or $250,000 for single. However, in order to qualify for the windfall tax break, you must have lived in the home two out of the last five years.

During that period, you could have taken a cruise for several months out of your "two years" and still qualify. Those of us who remember well the egregious capital gains taxes of years past, are amazed that even more people have not cashed in on this windfall and used the extra tax-free money to re-invest in real estate.

As a real estate broker, I strongly advise real estate to my clients as an investment that almost always rises in value. Real estate has far less risk than many investments such as the volatile stock market, for example.
